The Laurens boys competed in the 5A Qualifier Saturday, May 4th at Spring Valley HS. Although the meet was scheduled for Saturday; Laurens had to wait until Monday to secure a birth in the state track meet.
The weather was beautiful as the day began and our athletes performed just as beautifully on the track and in field events. Several athletes set personal best marks throughout the competition. Rodarius Yeargin, Mark McGowan, TJ Garlington and Braden Smith all set new marks in their respective events. The 4×100 relay team (Chase Gambrell, Travon Grant, Zacariah Miller, and Tye Roberson) and 4×400 team (Deidre Smith, Malikai Walker, Ernesto Ramirez, Isaac Craig) set a season best time. It was pleasing as a coach to see the athletes work hard throughout the season and it culminate with a season best performance during their last competition of the season. As the bad weather approached, delays would send the group back to the bus to wait for storms to clear the area. After the second weather delay, the remainder of the meet would be postponed until Monday, May 6.
Evan Prince was ready to run to secure his spot as one of the top-8 5A 3200 meter runners in the state. Evan knew that it would possibly take a major effort on his behalf to qualify. Luckily, he was up for the challenge and placed 5th overall to earn a spot.
