The Raiders won the coin toss on Thursday night and deferred to the second half to receive the kickoff. The first play from scrimmage continued to favor the Raiders. Keshard Davis picked off the Wade Hampton pass around the 50 yard line. Keshard was the beneficiary of a strong pass rush by the front 7. Starting QB, Nick Humphries (Cole Mundy is in concussion protocol) started strong completing a pass to Jayden McGowan to place the ball inside the 1 yard line. Jeremiah Fuller completed the opening possession with a 1 yard TD run. Brian Sheffield converted the PAT to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead.
The start of the 2nd quarter resembled the opening of the game. Wade Hampton’s RB had a nice run stopped by Isaac Craig. Craig stripped the RB of the ball and Keshawn Bluford recovered the fumble. The Raiders were unable to convert the turnover into points. As the half came to a close, the Generals were able to mount a drive and score on a 2 yard run. The Raider JV defense held on the conversion attempt. This will ultimately be the deciding factor in the game.
The second half was a defensive battle that limited both offenses. The defenders were strong and forced punts throughout the half. Laurens’ offense were able to produce a drive in the 4th quarter to seal the victory.
Many players contributed to the victory on Wednesday. Nick Cook had a great game blocking on offense and made a nice catch and run. Defensively, he made a couple key tackles to force punts to end drives. Nick Humphries was solid in his start at QB. The win improves the team record to 2-1 on the season.
