Raiders News · “FIRST” Robotics Night

The Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) Athletic Department is proud to present the “FIRST” Robotics Night at this week’s football game. The Raiders’ football team will play Westside High School at home this Friday, October 4, 2019. Be sure to come see the robots inside K.C. Hanna Stadium. The kick-off for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Like football, there’s loud cheering, colorful uniforms, and fast-paced gameplay involved with robotic competitions. With the recent increase in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, robots are becoming just as popular to watch as quarterbacks passing footballs to receivers.

The LDHS robotics team is a part of FIRST, an international not-for-profit organization of student robotics clubs. FIRST has programs for all grade levels from kindergarten to senior year. As part of the Robotics Night, robotics team members from both the high school and middle school, along with alumni of ROBOTZ garage, are invited to attend a tailgating event at 6:15 p.m. in the shot and discus track and field area behind the baseball field.

“For all the competition, pressure, and technology, there is also a tremendous amount of camaraderie that takes place. We want to showcase the success of all the programs of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) as well as build the connection and passion between middle and high school students who are interested in STEM,” said Robotics school mentor, Rob Sheffield.

Being part of robotics is not just about science. Students also learn how to connect with the business community to raise money to purchase the supplies they need to build the robots. Industry mentors include BOSCH/Rexroth, Steukin Precision Metal and Flour Engineering, Procurement and Construction.

Fans of both football and robotics are encouraged to come and check out the robots on display during the football game, as the high school robotics team announces the launch of the “L55 Lego Robotics Invitational,” to be held at LDHS on December 14, 2019.
