Raiders News · LDHS to Host Sports Physical Night

Prisma Health High School Athletic Trainers for Laurens District High School (LDHS) are committed to providing student-athletes with the highest quality healthcare available to improve athletic performance following injuries and increase overall well-being. LDHS Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize patient and client activity and participation in athletics, work, and life.

LDHS athletic trainers, Meredith Cavagrotti and Rebecca Timmins, have been at the high school since 2017. For the past two years, they have organized a sports participation physical evaluation (PPE) night for athletes. This evaluation must be performed by a doctor and is required by the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) for participation in athletics at the middle and high school level.

The second “Sports Physical Night” of the spring will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, from 5:50 pm until 7:30 pm at LDHS. Student-Athletes are required to sign up for an appointment and bring with them to the physical the PPE form filled out and signed by a parent. The “Sports Physical Night” is open to Laurens County School District 55 athletes in grades 7 – 12 who are planning on participating in sports during the summer and next school year (2019-2020). The Sign-Up form and PPE form can be found on the athletic website at

The athletic trainers developed a more efficient way to see a large number of athletes on “Sports Physical Night” by requiring appointments. With a recent survey after the first “sports physical night” requiring athletes to have an appointment, responses showed that the overall convenience and efficiency was more enjoyable for both the athletes and doctors. While athletes can still make an appointment to see their primary doctor to receive a physical, the athletic department still considers this night to be an opportunity to support the athletic training program at LDHS. Half of the proceeds go to Laurens Family Medicine, and the other half goes to the athletic training budget to purchase new items for the LDHS training room, which is responsible for taking care of all the athletes.

“We have seen an increase in participation in our Sports Physical Night and every year we try to improve our way of doing things. This year we are asking athletes to make an appointment and bring their portion of the paperwork already completed and signed. We are thankful to Laurens Family Medicine for providing the doctors to host our sport physical night. The rest of our volunteers are coaches, athletic staff, students in health science clinical studies and student athletic trainers who feel this night is of value to them and student-athletes,” says LDHS athletic director Tommy Spires.
