Coed Varsity Robotics · FRC Team 4451 from LDHS Wins Regional and Chairman’s Award at Rocket City Regional

FRC Team 4451 Competed in the Rocket City Regional in Huntsville, AL this past weekend.  Our robot “Eagle” finished the qualifying rounds as the #2 ranked robot out of 55 robots.  (There were teams from SC, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, and Brasil)  We were the Captain of Alliance #2 and we selected team 364 Team Fusion from Gulfport, Mississippi with our first pick, and team 7072 O.G.R.E.(Opelika’s Greatest Robotics Engineers) from Opelika, Alabama with our second pick.  Our Alliance finished the elimination rounds with a 6-0 record to win the regional (our second regional win of 2019).
Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. The FIRST Robotics Competition (FIRST) is the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.

The highlight of this trip occurred when FRC Team 4451 was chosen as the 2019 Rocket City Regional Chairman’s Award recipient. The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award in FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.

The concept of the Chairman’s Award enables FIRST to recognize teams for their exemplary efforts in spreading the FIRST message.  The teams who have earned the Regional and District Championship Chairman’s Award can travel to the FIRST Championship to be considered for the Chairman’s Award.
Our next competition will be the FIRST World Championships in Houston, TX on April 16-20.
