Michaela Smith, a 2015 Graduate from Laurens District High School (LDHS), was recently announced as the new softball coach at LDHS. Smith will be meeting the team and the community at a 6:00 PM meeting in the big gym at LDHS on Friday, June 22, 2018. While the meeting is primarily to meet those girls who are rising seventh (7th) through twelfth (12th) graders interested in playing softball for the Raiders in 2018-2019; she is inviting any girl of any age to the meeting. Smith plans to have practices with the Raider veterans and prospects on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. However, on Mondays, Smith will be hosting a free clinic for girls in second (2nd) through sixth (6th) grade from 7:00 – 8:30 PM.
Smith knows that softball opportunities for younger girls are limited in Laurens County School District 55. She hopes these free clinics will spark an interest in those girls and help them develop the fundamental skills they will need when they reach an age where they are able to play on either the JV or Varsity squad. Smith added, “If we can generate enough interest at an earlier age and increase the number of girls participating in grade seven (7) and beyond, we may be able to add an additional squad of younger girls to our program.” Smith also hopes to get some of her current players involved in the Monday clinics, saying, “Teaching is a great way to reinforce the skills our players are developing. If (the players) can teach a young girl the proper way to field, throw, and hit, it will help them understand what they need to improve their own game.”
