Rivalry week in Laurens County “Kicked-Off” at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Wilder Stadium in Clinton, SC. The opening 10 minutes of the contest flew by as the teams exchanged drives; lasting a total of 13 minutes “real time!”
The second quarter provided the first scoring of the contest. J’Von Harris blocked a Clinton punt attempt with 4 minutes remaining in the half. The Laurens offense took over at the 30 yard line on Clinton’s side of the 50. Jackson Mahon completed a pass to Mark McGowan; moving the ball to the Clinton 3 yard line. After a procedure penalty, Rat Peake rushed in for an 8 yard TD run. The conversion attempt failed and Laurens had a 6-0 lead.
The second score of the half came with just 8 seconds remaining in the half. J’Von Harris again made a play on 4th down to give the offense great field position. The defense held Clinton on 4 downs behind the efforts of Austin James, Austin Bercume, Mahon, Garrett Addy, and Travon Grant. After the turnover on downs, Peake crossed the field on a 31 yard TD run diving for the pylon to make the score 12-0 with 8.9 seconds to go in the half. The conversion attempt failed and Laurens took a 12-0 lead to halftime.
The 3rd quarter was a defensive battle until Clinton’s RB caught a pass in the flats, eluded a defender, and scampered 74 yards down the Clinton sideline for a score. The conversion attempt failed making the score 12-6 with 0:10 seconds to play in the 3rd. The defensive battle continued into the 4th. Clinton made a good defensive stand to get the ball in good field position. Late in the 4th quarter with about 2 minutes remaining, Clinton crossed the goal line for their second score, tying the contest at 12-12. After a CHS timeout, they lined up to attempt the go-ahead PAT. Austin James lead the defensive push as the attempt failed. The game was tied at 12 to end regulation.
In overtime, Clinton won the toss and elected to start the period on defense. Laurens lost yardage on the first play. The second play was a pass completion to Quin Patterson who made a very nice adjustment on the play to make the catch. After a 3rd down run, Mahon rolled to his left and completed a diving catch in the front corner of the endzone to take a 18-12 lead after the opening possession of OT.
Clinton starts their possession with a four yard run. Second play is a run to the left for a gain of 3 yards. This brings up 3rd and goal. After a timeout, Clinton is stopped for no gain. On the final play of the game, Clinton runs the ball to the left and is met by a host of defenders. The proudest moment comes when the defense said “Everyone made the last tackle!” No one guy wanted credit for making the stop to complete the victory!
